So I bought a Gigabyte motherboard, Intel Core i5-6600T and 16GB of RAM. After getting the new hardware set up, I plan to sell my QNAP NAS and my Intel NUC on Ebay. I subsequently decided to buy a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc and build a new NAS which could both act as both my file server and as my Emby media server. So I concluded that I just needed to stream from a device with a bit more horsepower than the QNAP. I copied some of the content over to the NUC and began streaming the same content to the TV. The NUC has an Intel Core i3 processor (i3-5005U - which has two cores running at 2.00GHz and does support hyperthreading.) This processor has a Geekbench multicore score of 991. So I determined that I was overtaxing the processor.Īs a temporary measure, I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and Emby media server on an Intel NUC (NUC5i3RYH) which also has 8GB of RAM. When I looked at the resource monitor, I discovered that the Celeron was pegged at 100% utilitization whenever the NAS paused and rebuffered.

I found that when streaming this 720p content to my 4K TV (without transcoding), the QNAP would periodically pause and buffer, then resume streaming. Most of my video content is 720p (documentaries, mostly). It has a Geekbench multicore score of 357. This processor has two cores and does not support hyperthreading. This QNAP NAS has an Intel Celeron J1800 processor running at 2.41GHz.

I started streaming on my home network with Emby media server installed on a QNAP TS-251. I thought I'd post them here in the hope that they may be useful to someone else. These are my notes about running Emby media server on various hardware.
